Our human ways make us believe that we need to have all of the answers and we need them right now or nothing in our lives will ever go right and we’ll be miserable.
Relax….
You don’t need to have all of the answers. In fact, you’ll drive yourself crazy thinking that you do. I believe most people’s instincts tell them they need to have a plan for everything. It’s the American way. We plan out our daily meals, we plan our daily agendas, we make plans with friends, we look to plan our futures and our entire lives. Most people carry a planner of some sort (digital or not) in order to keep their lives “on schedule.”
While we are busy living our tediously scheduled lives, we also begin to control all aspects of our lives. We trust less and instead try to control everything. I’ve recently come to realize this in my own life. For years I’ve been completely oblivious to how much of my life I’ve been trying to control. When this was pointed out to me, I denied it initially. I thought to myself, “I don’t try to control my life, I’m overall pretty easy going and tend to go with the flow.” Then I began to think of how busy I always felt, constantly trying to schedule every last thing possible into my schedule. There is no way I could remember everything without the help of my planner. With the help of my planner I was taking control of my chaotic life and leaving no room for God.
Do you know what control is?
It’s a lack of trust.
When we lack in trust, we take away from our faith in God. God has already written each one of our life stories. Yes, we still have the free will to make our own decisions, but our stories are already written. When you read a book you don’t freak out because you don’t know how the book ends. Instead, you enjoy the book until you arrive at the end because you know the author has already finished the story. Your life is the same way. Your story is already written, you just have to trust in that notion, let your faith lead you and enjoy the journey.
Stop trying to control everything and just surrender. It’s a tough thing to do, but when you do finally surrender and turn everything over to God, you will find that life gets a whole lot easier and more enjoyable too!
Do you struggle with surrendering to God? Do you have a story to share about letting go of control? I want to hear from you too!
