We live in a very individualistic world today. While individuality is important and necessary, we’ve pushed this concept so far to the extreme that we’ve severed ourselves from believing our actions, form of thought, and day-to-day existence affect anyone else. We live seemingly self-reliant lives where we deem ourselves as the one and only controller of our own destiny.
Oh, but how small we really are.
Yesterday I was reading a reflection written by Robin Hebert, where she describes a particular instance in Adoration where she began to visualize an image of an enormous eye as she heard God whisper to her, “I see you. Do you see you?”
Those two short sentences struck me and have stuck with me. I’ve been overcome by this idea of what it must look like to God, looking down from Heaven at me, watching me as I live my life. I think it’s easy to think of our lives from this inward space of, here I am and when I’m alone it’s just me, no one’s watching. We live as though people only see bits and pieces of the whole picture, which is true. Other people, no matter how much time they spend with us or how deeply they know us, they still only see and hear bits and pieces of the whole picture of who we are and every last element that makes us whole… but God is not other people.
God sees us. He sees all of us, in every moment, and he knows each of us more deeply than we even know ourselves. He knows why we make the decisions we do, every thought, every glance, every movement. He sees us. But do we even see ourselves?
Do we ever take the time to look at ourselves from an outward way? Do we reflect or take the time to think how each action, each word goes forth from us out into the world? Do we think about what it must look like from the Heavens looking down, to watch us go about in our day-to-day and interact with the world and the people around us? Do we think of the possible implications each tiny step of the way sets into motion?
I think it’s worth thinking about, and reflecting on, don’t you? I implore you to ask yourself, who am I when it seems no one is looking? Then imagine hearing God whisper to you, “I see you. Do you see you?”
